The Sonardyne 7986 Lightweight Release Transponder (LRT) has been developed from the type of transponders used in Sonardyne TZ/OBC positioning system. Unlike similar release transponders, it has both receive and transmit functions, enabling accurate slant ranges to be measured, release actuation to be confirmed and its position to be determined.

The Sonardyne 7986 Lightweight Release Transponder (LRT) is depth rated to 500m making it the ideal choice for use in continental shelf waters. Field replaceable alkaline or lithium battery packs give a listening life of 18 months or 4 years respectively. A "screw-off" release mechanism ensures a positive release action that overcomes any biological growth and all external parts are made of high strength plastics that provide excellent corrosion resistance.

The LRT is commanded using the same deck unit used to programme the identities of the TZ/OBC transponders. It can measure ranges to the transponder, programme addresses and prior to sending a secure release command, relocate the transponder. The deck unit can be controlled via RS232 enabling raw range data to be logged to a PC.

Also available as an option is the LRT Rope Canister. This allows seafloor objects such as bottom mounted ADCP's or tide gauges to be quickly recovered. By mooring one end of rope to the instrument on the seabed and the other end to the LRT, as the transponder ascends to the surface, high strength rope is deployed. This line can then be used to pull up the equipment or retrieve heavier tag lines.
